Refresh your daily habits and feel lighter, more energised and ready for the season ahead.

Spring is often associated with fresh starts — cleaning out the cupboards, opening the windows and getting ready for a new season. But there’s another area that deserves a little spring cleaning: your daily posture and movement habits. The way we sit, stand, work, drive, exercise and use our phones throughout the day can all influence how our body feels. And while you may not notice your posture changing from day to day, small habits can gradually become your normal way of moving. The good news is that you don’t need to completely overhaul your routine. A few simple changes can help you become more aware of how you’re using your body and encourage more movement throughout your day.

What does “good posture” actually mean?

Good posture isn’t about holding yourself rigidly upright or maintaining one “perfect” position all day. In reality, the best posture is often your next posture. Our bodies are designed to move. Spending hours in exactly the same position — even if that position looks “good” — can leave you feeling stiff and uncomfortable. Instead of trying to sit perfectly all day, think about creating a variety of comfortable positions and moving regularly.

🌱 5 simple ways to refresh your posture this spring

1. Break up long periods of sitting

Whether you’re working from home, at the office or spending time at a computer, it’s easy to lose track of time. Try setting a reminder to get up regularly. Walk to the kitchen, fill your water bottle, step outside or simply stand and move your body for a few minutes. The goal isn’t perfection — it’s more movement throughout your day.

2. Give your workstation a quick check

Take a look at your desk setup. Is your screen at a comfortable height? Are your keyboard and mouse easy to reach? Are your feet supported? Are you able to sit without constantly reaching forward or looking down? Small adjustments to your workstation can make your working day more comfortable. And remember: even the best workstation doesn’t replace regular movement.

3. Give your phone habits a refresh

Phones have become part of almost everything we do — checking messages, scrolling social media, reading emails and watching videos. Try occasionally bringing your phone closer to eye level rather than spending long periods looking down. Better still, put the phone down regularly and give your eyes, neck and body a break.

4. Add more movement to your day

You don’t necessarily need an hour at the gym to move more. A walk around the block, taking the stairs, stretching between meetings or getting outside for some fresh air can all add movement to your day. Living on Sydney’s Northern Beaches gives us plenty of opportunities to get outdoors, so why not make the most of it? A walk by the beach can be a great way to combine movement, fresh air and a mental reset.

5. Listen to what your body is telling you

Stiffness, recurring aches, muscle tension or feeling uncomfortable after sitting or standing for long periods can be signs that it’s worth paying attention to how your body is moving. Rather than simply working around the discomfort, consider having your posture and movement assessed. A chiropractic consultation can help identify areas of restricted movement or musculoskeletal imbalance and provide individualised advice based on your needs.

A spring reset doesn’t have to be complicated

Think of your posture like any other healthy habit. You don’t need to get everything right every day. Instead, focus on becoming more aware of how you’re sitting, standing and moving — and look for small opportunities to change position and move more often. Spring is the perfect time to check in with your body and refresh the habits that have become part of your everyday routine.
